Opt-Out/Waiver

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

Early Arrival Fall - 06/01/2025 - 09/12/2025

Fall - 06/01/2025 - 09/12/2025

Spring/Summer (New Students) - 10/30/2025 - 01/31/2026

Domestic Students

You may request to waive out of the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) if your alternate insurance health plan meets the following requirements:

  1. Medical coverage is active.
  2. Short-term coverage plans must cover the same coverage dates as SHIP.

NOTE: The following plan(s) will NOT be acceptable for waiver approval:

  • Financial Assistance plans are not accepted.

If your alternate coverage meets the above minimum requirements, submit electronic copies of the following document(s) with your online waiver request:

  • An electronic copy of the front and back of your health insurance ID card indicating the student as a covered member.

Waiver requests MUST be submitted no later than January 31, 2026 to be considered.

International Students

All F1, J1 visa holders and international student athletes are required to enroll in Dallas Baptist University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) unless a waiver is submitted and approved. The cost of the insurance coverage is not included in your tuition or fees and will appear as an additional charge on your account.  International students can request a waiver to SHIP but must demonstrate that they have equivalent, alternative health insurance coverage. In order to be approved for a waiver, your alternative health coverage must meet or exceed the requirements as set forth below and be submitted prior to the, January 31, 2026 waiver deadline.  Notification of acceptance or rejection of this request will be sent to your school email within seven business days.

A. Criteria to submit a waiver request:

  1. Student is sponsored by the United States government.
  2. Student is sponsored by a foreign government recognized by the United States or certain international, government-sponsored or non-governmental organizations, and covered under a health plan that is compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA). If the health plan does not include medical evacuation and repatriation, a rider must be purchased providing coverage at equal limits to the SHIP
  3. If the health plans above do not include medical evacuation and repatriation, a rider must be purchased providing coverage at equal limits to SHIP.

B. The alternative coverage must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Provide the Essential Minimum Benefits required by the PPACA with no annual limits. A list of the Essential Minimum Benefits can be found here: https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/essential-health-benefits/ .
    1. Contain no exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
  2. Covers 100% of Preventive Care as defined by the PPACA. A list of these preventive services can be found here: https://www.healthcare.gov/coverage/preventive-care-benefits/.
  3. Medical evacuation coverage amount is no less than $50,000.
  4. Repatriation coverage amount is no less than $25,000.

C. If your alternate coverage meets the above minimum requirements, submit electronic copies of the following documents with your online waiver request:

  • An electronic copy of the front and back of your health insurance ID card indicating the student as a covered member.
  • An electronic copy of your complete policy, including coverage amounts, exclusions, and limitations in English using US dollars.
  • A scanned copy of your medical evacuation and repatriation coverage (if you have this coverage).

NOTE: The following plan(s) will NOT be acceptable for waiver approval:

  • Healthcare Sharing Plans are not accepted.
  • Short-term coverage plans are not accepted.
  • Financial Assistance plans are not accepted.
  • Travel plans or plans that require you to pay for treatment yourself and then apply for reimbursement are not accepted.
